New Health Information Centre MKI in Masiphumelele, South Africa

Recently, non-profit organization MKI – The Health Teachers was involved in two festive events in South Africa. On 29 November a new Health Information Centre was opened in the Masiphumelele township. One day later, Archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu officially opened Johan's restaurant at Longridge.MKI, the organization founded by Dr. Harold Robles, has already established Health Information Centre’s in several townships. These Centres’s provide information to all layers of the population, with the aim of improving their basic knowledge about health-related matters.Dr. Harold Robles, founder of MKI – The Health Teachers: "It is heartwarming to see how many people devote themselves to providing the people in the townships with health related information. With simple means they learn basic skills with which they improve their health. This basic knowledge leads to fewer and fewer people dying unnecessarily from diarrhea and infections. "The opening of the Health Information Centre on 29 November took place at the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre (DTHF). This is a non-profit organization that focuses on research, treatment, training and the prevention of HIV and related infections in southern Africa. The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre is a place for young people to meet and study. There are activities in the field of sport, theatre, art, health, help with job applications and homework, and a clinic which is aimed at preventing diseases. The opening of the Health Information Centre was made possible by the Amsterdam-based Optimix Foundation, which has provided the funding for the first five years.On 30 November Desmond Tutu officially opened restaurant Johan’s at Longridge. Longridge is the vineyard of a Dutch family that supports MKI; part of the proceeds of all Longridge wines will go to the MKI organization.
